In the U.S., in 1907 Anna Jarvis, began a campaign to establish a national Mother's Day. And while it took another seven years for Mother’s Day to be declared official by President Woodrow Wilson.
Miss Anna Jarvis, the founder of Mother's day, sent 500 white carnations to the Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church, in Grafton, West Virginia to celebrate Mother's Day on the death anniversary of her mother. She wanted the flowers to be distributed among the
mothers.
Not only carnations are her mother's favorite flowers, but Miss Jarvis also said :
“The white carnation is preferred because it may be thought to typify some of the virtues of motherhood; ... whiteness stands for purity; its lasting qualities, faithfulness; its fragrance, love; its wide field of growth, charity; its form, beauty...”.
Then onward, carnations have become the traditional mother’s day flowers. Later on different colors were adopted for different meanings. Pink carnations are given to mothers to represent love for them and white carnations are worn to honor those mothers who are no longer living.
